1965 Retro Basketball Playoffs
Major Season EventsThe Rottingham Rogues got off to a quick start in the regular season in the east, but as injuries to the Rogues set in, the Ahwatukee Indians clawed their way into first and held onto home court advantage for the playoffs. The Indiana Hackers had the league's second-best record and made the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. Coach Knowles' Hackers are the only team to make the playoffs each season. Sister-team Ahwatukee made the playoffs for the third consecutive season. Rookie-of-the-year Willis Reed averaged 21.1 pts, 14.4 rebs, 2.3 blocks, 1.9 steals for Costa Mesa. Runner-up for ROY was Luke Jackson, Indiana (15.3 pts, 12.9 rebs, 2.0 blocks, 1.8 steals). Notable Finals performances:
Notable playoff performances:
FinalsGame 1: The King's Crimon Cobras 126, Rottingham Rogues 119 The Rogues took the ball to the hoop, shooting 12 more FTs than KCC. The Rogues cut the lead to one with 4:57 left in the game, kept it close the rest of the way (despite shooting 37% FGs), but fell short by 7 pts. Starting Cobra power forward Jerry Lucas was injured and will miss the rest of the post-season. Wilt scored 48 and grabbed 25 rebs for the Cobras. Game 2: Rottingham Rogues 137, The King's Crimson Cobras 128 The Rogues shot a blazing 55.4%, limiting KCC's rebounds to 38 and overcoming Rottingham's 9-turnover disadvantage. KCC shot 10 more free throws, but missed 14 FTs to Rottingham's 5. Jerry West (36 pts, Rottingham) and Wilt (40 pts, KCC) were the game's leading scorers. Injuries: Rottingham's starting forward Tommy Heinsohn was injured and will miss the next 4 games. KCC's Bailey Howell will miss the next 3 games. KCC's weak bench will be put to the test with two starting forwards out. Game 3: Rottingham Rogues 119, The King's Crimson Cobras 111 Rottingham's starting center Bob Pettit suffered an in-game injury that limited him to 19 minutes, allowing KCC's Wilt to go off for 44/31. KCC turned the ball over only 4 times, but Rottingham's DeBusschere and Jerry West combined for 63 pts/25 rebs. KCC's superb ball-handling was trumped by their poor shooting (38.5% FGs; 32.9% for non-Wilt players). Pettit's injury won't affect the next game. Game 4: Rottingham Rogues 126, The King's Crimson Cobras 125 KCC's Satch Sanders, starting for injured Bailey Howell, hit the winning shot at the buzzer, but it was later ruled to be after the buzzer. KCC's Wilt scored 46 points, but also missed 14 free throws. Little-used Rogue forward Ray Scott who has been seeing brief action coming off the bench in Heinsohn's absence played 21 minutes due to foul trouble to Rottingham's starters. Scott had 7 assists, no turnovers, and shot 6 of 9. Game 5: The King's Crimon Cobras 127, Rottingham Rogues 122 For the second straight game, Wilt missed 13+ free throws (but did get 2 Rogues to DQ). Meanwhile Rottingham was bitten by the turnover bug. DeBusschere poured in 31 while grabbing 11 rebounds for the Rogues while Oscar Robertson nearly had a triple-double for KCC (32/8/11) with zero turnovers. Wilt had 40/16 with 5 steals, 5 blocks, & 3 assists. Game 6: The King's Crimson Cobras 147, Rottingham Rogues 127 Howell (starting KCC forward) is back from injury. Wilt finally quit bricking his free throws (6 of 10) and had the mother of all playoff games: 50 pts, 25 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks. Teammate Oscar Robertson played almost the entire game, but fatigued at the end and twisted an ankle, causing him to miss the next game. Oscar finished with another near-triple-double (28/9/10). Rottingham's Jerry West scored 30 and grabbed 8 rebs from the guard position. Starting Rogue forward Tommy Heinsohn will be available for game 7. Game 7: Rottingham Rogues 122, The King's Crimson Cobras 118 Heinsohn (starting Rogue forward) was back from injury. KCC's glaring weakness, bench depth, especially at point guard, was put to the test in game 7. With starting guard Oscar Robertson out for game 7, little-known shooting guard Eddie Miles was thrust into the lineup with only one guard available off the bench (Al Bianchi). A more ominous sign: none of KCC's 3 guards on the roster was a point guard. Miles got off to a great start, hitting both of his shots in the first 4 minutes. Then disaster struck: Miles went down with a knee injury and was out for the game. Al Bianchi came off the bench, leaving no other guards available off the bench. Bianchi was forced to play 30 minutes, almost double his normal 18.6 minutes. He played admirably, scoring 16 (his playoff high) on 7 of 14 FGs with no turnovers, but he fouled out five minutes into the 4th quarter. And he only had 2 assists. KCC's other starting guard, Terry Dischinger was forced to play all 48 minutes and became severely fatigued (but he still managed to shoot 11 of 23 with 9 rebs and only 3 TOs). Dischinger only had 1 assist in 48 minutes. In fact, KCC had only 8 assists in the entire game. Meanwhile, Rottingham's Hal Greer matched KCC's assists all by himself. Even Rogue forward Dave DeBusschere contributed 7 assists. The Rogues "out-assisted" KCC 29-8. KCC's Wilt regressed to his FT-bricking ways (10 misses). Rottingham's stats
Division Finals:East: Rottingham wins 4-3 Game 2: Rottingham Rogues 121, Ahwatukee Indians 117 Jerry West & Bob Pettit of Rottingham combined for 69 pts and 30 rebs. Rottingham could take the series to 7 games if they can remain healthy. Game 3: Ahwatukee Indians 125, Rottingham Rogues 112 Going into the 3rd quarter, three Rogues were in foul trouble: both starting forwards (DeBusschere & Heinsohn) and starting guard Hal Greer. Heinsohn & Greer both fouled out. Retro 6th-man Jim Barnes filled in nicely (15 rebs, 5 of 10 shooting) but the Indians were too much (chief Indian Walt Bellamy had 31 pts, 12 rebs, 4 blocks, 13 of 18 FGs, and 13 pts in the 4th qtr). Game 4: Ahwatukee Indians 128, Rottingham Rogues 118 Youth trumped experienced at the center position: Ahwatukee's Walt Bellamy lit up Bob Pettit for 39 pts, 20 rebs, only 1 TO, 16-24 FGs, 7-8 FTs. Game 5: Rottingham Rogues 127, Ahwatukee Indians 122 14 lead changes, 10 ties. Rogue Jerry West: 37 pts, 14 of 19 FGs, 9 of 9 FTs. Game 6: Rottingham Rogues 131, Ahwatukee Indians 129 22 ties, 7 lead changes. Fourth-quarter comeback (37-29; 15 of Ahwatukee's 37 came from Gus Johnson) falls short. Ahwatukee's basket at the buzzer (Havlicek) leaves the Indians 2 points short. The normally injury-riddled Rogues have so far avoided any injuries, even minor owies. Game 7: Rottingham Rogues 132, Ahwatukee Indians 109 Rogue guards Jerry West (starter) and Al Attles (off the bench) combine to shoot 24 FTs, getting starting point guard Lenny Wilkens into serious foul trouble (DQ). The Rogues attempted 47 free throws. West ended up with 35 pts on 13 of 18 FGs. Ahwatukee's playoff stats West: KCC wins 4-0 Game 1: The King's Crimson Cobras 145, Indiana Hackers 122 Oscar Robertson shot a sizzling 14 of 18 for KCC. The normally turnover-prone Cobras only had 9 TOs, one less than the Hackers. Game 2: The King's Crimson Cobras 124, Indiana Hackers 117 Indiana's Bill Russell had the second-best rebounding season in our league's history this year, averaging 21.7 per game. But through three quarters of this game, KCC's Chamberlain was winning his personal rebound battle with Russell: 18-9. Wilt finished with 37pts/25reb. Game 3: The King's Crimson Cobras 140, Indiana Hackers 124 KCC suffered 4 DQs, including a rare DQ for Wilt (in 23 minutes). Oscar Robertson was one of only two Cobra starters that didn't foul out and he led the team to a win with a triple-double (40/11/13 including 18 of 20 FTs). Game 4: The King's Crimson Cobras 117, Indiana Hackers 115 This game came down to a Luke Jackson shot at the buzzer to try to send the game into OT. KCC's Jerry Lucas was nearly unstoppable, scoring 31 pts on 15 of 22 shooting. He also grabbed 19 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. Indiana's playoff stats Post-season InjuriesIn game 5 of Rot/Ahw, Ahwatukee Indian John Havlicek suffered an in-game ankle injury, and was limited to 30 minutes. The injury will not keep him out of future games. In game 1 of the Finals, KCC's Jerry Lucas was injured and will miss the rest of the post-season (out 20 games; he missed 16 in the NBA that year). In game 2 of the Finals, Rottingham's starting forward Tommy Heinsohn was injured and will miss 4 games. KCC's Bailey Howell will miss 3 games. In game 6 of the Finals, Oscar Robertson was injured late in the game and will miss game 7.
