1964 Retro Basketball Playoffs
Major Season Events
The playoff positioning was determined early in the regular season, leaving
only the first pick in the draft as the only mystery. However, in the
playoffs, Indiana shocked retro fans by upsetting heavily-favored Rottingham
Rogues, despite Indiana missing two starters due to multiple-game injuries
(center Bill Russell and guard Doh Ohl). Little-used Hacker reserves came
through in the clutch in overtime in the pivotal 4th game.
Russell was healthy for the Finals, facing KCC's Wilt Chamberlain. Indiana
fell behind 3 games to zero, but starting Hacker guard Doh Ohl healed
enough to start in game four. But he only remained healthy for 7 minutes
of the first quarter and was injured again (out 3 more games). Indiana
kept it close and even had the lead with 3 minutes left in the game, but
the Hackers had to once again go deep in their bench for guards, but this
time the reserves couldn't pull another rabbit out of the hat.
Playoff MVP Wilt Chamberlain averaged 30.9 pts, 16.8 rebs, 4.6 assists,
2.4 blocks and shot 51.2%. Playoff regular Elgin Baylor averaged 33.1
pts, 10.3 rebs, 4.2 assists and shot 55.4% for Indiana.
Notable Finals performances:
- In game 1 of the Finals, Indiana starting guard Gary Philips
(starting in place of injured Don Ohl) get 2 fouls in 2 minutes
and has to sit down. Little-used backup Adrian Smith replaces
Philips and plays the rest of the 1st qtr, scoring 10 pts on 5
of 8 shooting. Meanwhile, Bill Russell, back from his 3-game injury,
collects 12 rebs in the first quarter. In the 2nd qtr, Philips
plays 3 minutes, gets his 3rd foul, and heads to the bench. Smith
plays 9 minutes and scores 4 more pts on 2 of 3 shooting. The
Hacker backups have earned their money in these playoffs. Smith,
8th man off the bench, ends up being the team's 2nd-leading scorer
with 20 pts of 10 of 18 shooting, but it's not enough for a win.
- See the game four description below for Indiana's continued
injury and depth woes.
Notable playoff performances:
- Indiana's Baylor (34 pts, 11 rebs, 15 of 23 FGs, 4 steals) outscores
Rottingham's Greer (32 pts, 8 rebs, 7 assists, 1 TO) but loses the
game
- Wilt plays 12 minutes of 1st qtr in game one and only has one shot
attempt from the field. Oscar Robertson picks up the slack with a
triple-double.
- In game 2, Indiana's Baylor scored 44 pts, including 26 in a 2nd-half
comeback. He also had 17 rebs, shot 20-31, dished out 4 assists, and
only had 1 TO. Indiana's Don Ohl poured in 35 pts (including 12 in
the critical 3rd qtr) on 13 of 22 shooting. He also had 7 assists.
Indiana's Bill Russell joined the assist parade with 9 of his own.
- Indiana's Bill Russell grabs 20 rebs before going down with an ankle
injury that will cost him 3 games. Teammate Elgin Baylor had 41/11,
but Indiana lost. Starting guard Don Ohl went down with a knee injury
3 minutes into the game (out for 6 games).
- In game 4 of Rottingham/Indiana, the Hackers somehow manage to force
overtime despite being without two injured starters (Bill Russell
& Don Ohl) However, once in overtime, Indiana's starters are severely
fatigued and the 10th, 11th, and 12th men have to come off the bench
(Naulls, Loughery, & Kojis). Of the 11 overtime pts that Indiana
scores on their way to victory, 10 are scored by the 3 men at the
end of the bench.
- In the playoff series against Ahwatukee, Wilt averaged 33.3 pts,
15.8 rebs, 4 assists, 3.5 blocks and shot 57.4%.
- In the playoff series against KCC, Walt Bellamy averaged 31.3 pts,
14.5 rebs, and 2 blocks. Teammate Havlicek averaged 23.5 pts on 50.6%
shooting.
- In the playoff series against Rottingham, Indiana's Elgin Baylor
averaged 35.2 pts, 11.8 rebs, 4.2 assists, 2.2 steals, while shooting
56.8% FGs and 93.8% FTs. The key factor in the series was the game
4 OT victory for Indiana in which the 10th, 11th, and 12th men are
forced into action in overtime due to starter fatigue and end up scoring
10 of Indiana's 11 OT pts.
