1963 Retro Playoffs
Major Season Events
Our Retro League has yet to have back-to-back champions. Last year's
champs, the Indiana Hackers, lost in game 7 of the playoffs due to Rottingham's
Bob Pettit and his monster game 7 performance (35 pts, 18 rebs, 5 blocks,
12 of 18 FGs, 11 of 11 FTs, 4 assists, 1 turnover).
KCC won a record-setting 74 wins (NBA record: 72 wins in the 1995-96
season; our Current-League record: 72 wins in our 2003 season) as all
of their players peaked at the same time, creating a "perfect storm"
for opposing coaches. Even though the Cobras only lost 1 post-season game,
Rottingham made many games close despite having Jerry West available for
only 16 minutes of the Finals before succumbing to a groin injury.
On the other end of the spectrum, River City set a record for lowest
point differential (-11.1 points per game), breaking the Current League
record (-9.9 set by the 1996 San Juan Orcas) and the Retro League record
(-9.3 set by KCC in 1960).
Notable Finals performances:
- In 9 playoff games, KCC's Wilt averaged 38.6 pts, 19.8 rebs,
53.2% FGs, 52.3% FTs, 3.9 blocks, 2.9 steals, 1.7 fouls
- In 9 playoff games, KCC's Oscar Robertson averaged 25.2 pts,
9.1 rebs, 52.5% FGs, 6.0 assists, 1.9 turnovers
- Game 5: With 4 out of 5 Rottingham starters fouled out, 10-man
Clyde Lovellette came off the Rogue bench and scored an amazing
20 pts in 8 minutes on 10 of 12 shooting, single-handedly keeping
fatigued and outmatched Rottingham in the game until the final
shot at the buzzer (which he also made)
- Game 5: KCC's Wilt Chamberlain, 33 pts, 21 rebs, 7 blocks, 7
of 7 FTs
- Game 5: Rookie of the Year Terry Dischinger, 33 pts, 11 of 16

5 blocks, and 4 assists. He scored 31 in the 2nd half and 22 in
the 4th qtr (compared to Rottingham's 25 4th-qtr pts).

57.3%, averaged 27.5 pts, 9.5 rebs, 6.8 assists, 2.3 turnovers
- Rottingham's Bob Pettit in game 7: 35 pts, 18 rebs, 5 blocks, 12-18
