1962 Retro Playoffs
Major Season Events
Coach Knowles takes over the Long Beach franchise after the LB coach
failed to appear at the draft. The team's name was changed to Ahwatukee,
Coach Knowles drafted rookie-of-the-year Walt Bellamy who put up some
huge numbers (32.7 pts which was 2nd best in the league, shot 52.1% which
led the league, 17.4 rebs which was good for 3rd place, and 3.77 blocks,
good for 3rd best in the league).
In any other year, Bellamy would have been the league's MVP, except Wilt
put up scoring numbers that will likely never be approached yet alone
equalled: 49.4 pts per game, including 72 in a playoff loss.
Costa Mesa made the playoffs for the 3rd straight year. KCC became the
first retro team to win 60+ games (65), beating Costa's old record of
58 wins.
In the end, underdog Indiana Hackers only lost 1 game on their way to
winning the third retro title. With the prospect of being able to start
twin towers next year (Bill Russell & Johnny "Red" Kerr)
alongside playoff MVP Elgin Baylor, things are looking bright for the
Indiana franchise.
Notable playoff performances:
