1961 Retro Playoffs
Major Season EventsOscar Robertson (KCC), Jerry West (Rottingham, 18.1 pts, 4.6 assists) and Lenny Wilkens (Indiana, 12.4 pts, 3.6 assists), were the prize rookies in the draft. In the season's only trade, Long Beach gave up on the season and traded two aging starters (Paul Arizin and Bill Sharman) to Costa Mesa. At the time, Arizin was averaging 26.1 points and Sharman was scoring 18.4 per game. Long Beach's plan worked, as the team went 18-37 the rest of the way to finish the season 23-59, wrapping up the first pick in the draft. The obvious first pick of the draft will be Walt Bellamy (31.6 points, 19.0 rebounds, 51.9 FG%), but that will mean either Walt or Bill Russell will have to be traded since they both can only play center. Chamberlain dominated individual stats; he was the leading scorer, rebounder, FG% shooter, came in second in blocks, and fourth in steals. Indiana's Elgin Baylor was 2nd in scoring (31.1) and 4th in rebounding (15.6). Costa Mesa's Jack Twyman was 2nd in FG% (49.6%) while Long Beach's Bill Russell was first in blocks (3.76) and 2nd in rebounds (17.2). Rookie of the Year: KCC's Oscar Robertson, 28.4 pts, 7.9 rebs, 7.6 assists, 2.8 steals, 48.2 FG% Regular season MVP: KCC's Wilt Chamberlain, 37.3 pts, 20.3 rebs, 3.7 blocks, 2.5 steals, 51.3% Notable playoff performances:
