1960 Retro Playoffs

Major Season Events

The initial retro hoops season was noted for its lack of trades: only one player was traded. Wilt was traded from Costa to KCC for one season, prompting some coaches to call for a ban on so-called "loaner" trades. These trades were then banned after a vote by the coaches. However, Wilt went on to lead his new temporary team, the Costa Mesa Bulldogs, to a 4-1 Finals victory over Allen Jenkins' Long Beach Tygers.

After rookie Wilt Chamberlain left KCC, the team folded and set a record for most losses in a season.

Notable playoff performances:

  • Playoff MVP: Wilt (Costa) 32.4 pts per game, 22.4 rebs, 4.3 blocks, 3 steals, 49.4% FG
  • Bill Russell (Long Beach): 26.3 pts, 22.5 rebs, 54.3% FG, 4 blocks
  • In the 4th quarter of game 5 of the first round, Russell hit on 7 of 8 shots, scored 15 points, and grabbed 8 rebounds, ensuring his team went on to the Finals. Bill ended up with 37 pts, 29 rebs, 6 blocks, and 5 steals for the game.
  • Cliff Hagan (RC) had 8 steals, 38 pts, 9 rebs, and zero TOs on 15 of 25 shooting in River City's only playoff win against Costa Mesa.
  • Wilt had 54 pts, 19 rebs, 4 blocks, and 4 steals on 22 of 32 shooting against River City (game 4).
  • Russell had 33 rebs, 31 pts & 6 blocks against Indiana in game 3.
  • In game 4 of the Finals, Long Beach backup Rudy LaRusso and little-used Bob Hopkins combined for 53 minutes off the bench to help foul-prone Long Beach to a 1-point win. The unusual duo combined for 40 pts, 17 rebs, 16 of 23 FGs, and 8 of 8 FTs.
  • In game 3 of the Finals, against Russell, Wilt grabbed 21 offensive rebs (32 rebs total) to go along with his 32 points (Russell did hold him to 13 of 39 shooting).
